Hypertension

symptoms of hypertension

In hypertension, the blood pressure is consistently too high. High blood pressure is a condition that develops slowly over the years. This condition could be dangerous for you because it initially does not show any signs of anything wrong. It is a silent killer as the damage keeps occurring within your body, and you are completely unaware of it. That is why it is important to know the symptoms of hypertension.

Symptoms Of Hypertension

Hypertension is generally a silent disease. It means it keeps developing inside the body of the patient, without showing any problems. So the patient usually does not know that they have hypertension for years. It may take years, sometimes even decades to reach levels severe enough that the symptoms start appearing.

Symptoms Of Elevated Blood Pressure/Hypertension

Symptoms of hypertension

Hypertension may begin as elevated blood pressure or is when your blood pressure is a bit more than normal.

The elevated blood pressure may range from corresponding to a systolic pressure of 120 to 129 and a diastolic pressure of 80 or less.

There are no symptoms to be seen in this state. When your blood pressure is a bit more than normal, then it does not show any warning symptoms. About 4 out of 5 people with hypertension do not know they have it because of the absence of any symptom. You have to keep a track of your blood pressure by visiting your doctor regularly and having your blood pressure checked.

If your systolic pressure is more than 130 and diastolic pressure is more than 85, it is hypertension. Hypertension does not show any symptoms for years or decades but when it does it may have already reached a stage of hypertension emergency or crisis.

Symptoms Of Hypertension Crisis

When your blood pressure reaches 180/120 or higher, it is a hypertension crisis. Hypertension crisis is also known as malignant hypertension. This condition usually appears when hypertension is undiagnosed and untreated for a prolonged time. Sometimes, when a patient does not follow proper measures and take medication as prescribed, hypertension-crisis may appear.

When symptoms do occur in hypertension, they could be attributed to other health issues. Symptoms can include –

Headaches

You may experience early morning headaches. Whenever you face some health problems, there are some physical changes that occur in your body, these changes cause some discomforts and pain in your body. Headache is one of them.

Nose bleeds

Most of the time, high blood pressure does not cause nose bleeds. But this can happen in hypertensive crises when your blood pressure is extremely high. If you have hypertension or have seen someone with a high blood pressure condition, you may have noticed that sometimes their nose bleeds.

Blurry Vision

As high blood pressure affects your eyes, you may not see as clearly as before. High blood pressure damages the blood vessels in the retina part of the eye. As a result, you could get blurred vision

Shortness of Breath

This is another symptom that a person may experience during hypertension. You may feel shortness of breath initially while exercising and eventually while at rest.

Dizziness

Feeling dizzy sometimes could be a sign of some other health problems too, but it can be experienced during high blood pressure too. Some people may even faint if followed by a seizure.

Chest pain

During a hypertension crisis, chest pain may happen, because of the extra pressure on the heart for pumping blood. High blood pressure causes heart rhythms to be irregular causing discomfort or pain in the chest.

Blood in the urine

A person with hypertension may experience blood in the urine. Although it is rare. If you have high blood pressure and are experiencing blood in the urine, inform your doctor immediately.

When To Call A Doctor?

If you have any of these symptoms, see a doctor immediately. These symptoms require immediate medical attention. You could be having a hypertensive crisis that may lead to a heart attack or stroke. You may also have another serious health condition. Some people may not experience all or any of these symptoms. but if the reading shows high blood pressure, then waiting for any symptom of hypertension could be fatal and damage your organs severely. The best way to diagnose hypertension is to get a regular reading at every appointment. Most of the doctor’s clinics take a pressure reading at every appointment.

If you have blood pressure problems, it is best to keep an at-home monitor, so you can check your blood pressure more often at home.
