Insulin Therapy

Insulin therapy is a crucial way of treating type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. During diabetes, either our pancreases are not able to produce insulin or if produced, it is not used properly, which leads to a high glucose level in the blood. To fulfill the scarcity of insulin in the body, it becomes crucial to take insulin therapy. Insulin therapy allows us to inject the required amount of insulin into our body to keep the blood glucose level normal and control diabetes.

Why Is Insulin Injected In Your Body?

Diabetes is the major cause of using insulin. Insulin is a hormone in our body that is created by the pancreas. Its main function is to make proper use of the glucose or sugar that is received through the food and transfer it to the cells so that our body can get the desired energy. However, people with diabetes do not have the normal level of insulin in their bodies. Their pancreas either does not create insulin at all or if created, the cells restrict its use, due to which the level of sugar in the blood keeps on increasing.

When our body stops creating insulin, taking insulin therapy is the vital option. It helps in transferring the glucose received by food to other body parts including the heart, muscles, and brain, instead of increasing its level in the blood. Moreover, it helps in providing the desired energy to the body so we can function properly throughout the day.

What Are The Benefits of Using Insulin Injection?

Insulin is one of the most important hormones of our body that helps in transferring the glucose in parts of our body. In addition to this, it offers the required amount of fats to our body parts and gives us the energy to function properly. However, if there is a scarcity of insulin in our body then the sugar might remain in the blood and lead to the problem of high blood sugar. Diabetes can lead to various health complications including eye problems, kidney complications, high blood pressure, and more. Injecting a required amount of insulin in the blood can help in resisting the increase of sugar levels in the body.

6 Simple Steps To Inject Insulin As An Adult

Before you begin using the insulin, make sure you have acquired proper consultation regarding the insulin type and dosage. Now let’s understand step by step how to inject insulin into your body easily and safely.

Step 1

First, you will need an insulin pen, which can either be disposable or reusable. A disposable pen already contains insulin inside it. However, it can be used only for one time. While a reusable insulin pen can be used for a long time. However, you will need to fill an insulin cartridge for each use. The next thing you will need is a short and thin needle because the insulin is meant to be injected into your skin instead of the muscles and veins. This needle is for only one-time use, after which you will need to dispose of it.

Step 2:

Before you inject insulin into your body, make sure that your hands are properly cleaned and sanitized. Wash your hands thoroughly and wipe them with a clean towel.

Step 3:

Now you have to select the area of your body where you are going to inject the insulin. Select the body part having most of the fatty tissues. That could be the area below the belly button, thighs, and hips area. Always ensure to change the area whenever you are injecting insulin into your body. Do not inject insulin into the same area where you last injected the needle. It can lead to the formation of hard lumps called lypos which can resist the body from absorbing and using the insulin.

Step 4:

In the next step, you will need to attach the needle with the insulin pen. Begin with removing the outer cap of the needle and place it at the top of the insulin pen. Now, remove the inner portion of the needle. Dail two units on the insulin pen while facing it upwards. Now press the plunger till the insulin liquid appears from the top of the needle. This procedure is known as priming where you can regulate the insulin dosage and remove the excess air from the needle and cartridge.

Step 5:

Now dial the dosage level of your insulin pen and make sure that the area is properly cleaned where you are going to inject the needle. Hold the needle at a 90-degree angle and gently pinch the skin. Ensure to pinch the skin gently with the needle, otherwise, it may lead to a wound. Now press the plunger until the dial goes back to zero. Count up to 10 so that the insulin reaches your body until the dial reaches 0. Gently remove the needle from the skin after you are done.
