Difference Between PCOS And PCOD

A piece of complete information is all that a person requires to deal with a disease or syndrome mentally. PCOS and PCOD have worse mental risk factors than it has on the body. People talk a lot about these two diseases. They are still curious to know about the things that are common and uncommon between the two.

PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, whereas PCOD stands for Polycystic Ovary Disease. Both of these conditions keep a connection with the ovaries present in a female body. The leading cause of both of them is hormonal disturbances and imbalances.

Female ovaries release eggs alternatively every month. Disturbances in the cyclic release of the eggs can cause various problems, like fertility issues, period schedule, facial hair, androgens, and production of male hormones.

Let us first begin with understanding the mechanism of both of them.

What is PCOD?

When a person has PCOD, it means that the ovaries are filled with immature or partially mature eggs. These eggs develop to form cysts in the ovaries thereby causing hormonal imbalances. It is very important to optimize the diet when you have PCOD. Adding junk food to your diet makes you obese to an extent. Work and professional life bring you stress which you should not have. These parameters like junk food, overweight, stress, and hormonal imbalances accelerate the process of formation of cysts in the ovaries. Once these ovaries begin to develop cysts, there are chances that they become larger in size and start to produce large amounts of male androgens. This has a great impact on the woman’s fertility and her body. The basic symptoms of PCOS include an irregular menstrual cycle and ovulation process.

What is PCOS?

PCOS

PCOS is a metabolic disorder that keeps a close relationship with the ovaries. It is more severe than PCOD. When a person develops this syndrome, the ovaries start producing many many hormones which reflect in the form of facial hair, and an increased amount of androgens in the body. It can also be defined as the formation of follicular cysts. It also stops the release of eggs, which is the sole reason behind the irregularity in the menstruation cycle and ovulation, excessive gain in weight, and hair loss in the male pattern.

This was a brief introduction to both PCOS and PCOD.

Let’s take a glance at the difference between the two medical conditions.

PCOS is more serious

Whenever we develop a disease, the first thing that strikes the mind is the seriousness. PCOS, being more inclined towards the metabolism of an individual, is more serious. That is why it is termed a syndrome as it has spread its roots to all the parts of the body. On the other hand, PCOD is a disease that is caused due to hormonal imbalances in the body and can be cured with the right combination of a healthy diet and exercise.

PCOD is more common

The next thing is that PCOD is more common when it comes to surveys and case studies. Almost one-third of the women in the world are diagnosed with the disease. On the contrary, research results and surveys say that PCOS is less common among people.

PCOS has more complications

PCOS, as compared to PCOD, has more serious complications. The patients with PCOS show the risk of developing diabetes over time that comes along with other high blood pressure cardiac vascular issues as well. Obesity and endometrial cancer are also other complications of PCOS. Fortunately, the number of complications is lesser in PCOD.

PCOS is diagnosed in the early stages

PCOS is diagnosed in early life, especially during the reproductive years in a female’s life. There are chances of developing the syndrome in the teenage years that reflects with the onset of acne and excessive hair growth accompanied by an excessive gain of weight. These symptoms are visible at a younger age due to metabolic disturbances in the body. Doctors can diagnose PCOD even in the late stages of life when a woman is over with her reproductive stage.

PCOS brings infertility

PCOS brings along the most serious complexity of infertility. There is an increased risk of miscarriages during pregnancy if the person is suffering from PCOS. There is also evidence that if a person is suffering from PCOD,  she can easily conceive after a bit of consultation by an expert. All she needs to do is to monitor the diet and exercise to recover soon and become pregnant.

These are all differences that one can cite between PCOS and PCOD that you must know. Since you can see that there are many similarities between the two, you should make sure that you consult your doctor thoroughly to discuss each and everything so that there is no scope of confusion and he is aware of your entire medical history. This will help you to get a more accurate and oriented treatment of the disease.
